Traditional Chinese Medicine—both Acupuncture and, in some cases, herbs—offers a safe and effective remedy for women suffering from pregnancy nausea.  In fact, Chinese Medicine and acupuncture offer some of the most-effective treatment available for morning sickness today.

Most Western doctors offer drug treatments to patients who suffer from pregnancy nausea. These remedies are often expensive, and don’t necessarily always work.  Many of these patients who seek Western treatments for morning sickness turn to acupuncture as an alternative or complementary treatment to help them find relief.

One of the most attractive things about acupuncture during pregnancy is that it is all-natural.  No drugs will enter the mother or baby’s delicate systems.  Acupuncture also has shown to be extremely effective in managing morning sickness symptoms like nausea and vomiting. Most patients report a drastic improvement in symptoms, and a returned sense of well-being after acupuncture treatments.

While most morning sickness does not present a serious health threat, morning sickness can seriously compromise an expectant mother’s quality of life.  The primary source of morning sickness is caused by hormonal fluctuations occurring in a pregnant woman’s body.  The sudden spike of progesterone often seriously disrupts digestion, and induces a sensation of nausea. Morning sickness may also be due to a woman’s heightened sense of smell and taste during pregnancy.  Foods and food smells may seem more pungent or intense during fetal gestation.

In addition to hormones and smell sensitivity, changes in body temperature during pregnancy may also contribute to morning sickness.  Pregnant bodies have a higher body temperature, which can cause a woman to become extremely heat sensitive, and uncomfortable with temperature changes in her environment.

If you suffer from morning sickness, it is suggested that you receive acupuncture treatments two times a week for about a month.  Most women find relief from symptoms within the first week of treatment.  A treatment plan will be individually tailored to specifically address your morning sickness symptoms and experience.

There are also a few things you can do on your own to help yourself feel better.  Ginger, mint or citrus flavors can often calm a queasy stomach.  Health food stores may also sell acupressure wrist bands that stimulate the energy point that combats nausea.  Of course, I also encourage you to set up an acupuncture appointment to help support your health and happiness during your pregnancy.
